Beauty and the Beast is a French fairy tale, written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and first published in 1740.
There have been three different versions, but each one essentially tells the same story of a beautiful peasant girl who was belittled by her siblings. After her father meets a beast at a castle, he lets Beauty stay with the beast. Eventually, upon finding out that the beast is near death, Beauty admits she loves him, and he changes into a handsome prince who marries her.
The story has been adapted many times, most notably as both an animated movie and a live-action movie produced by Disney, and as a 1987 fantasy drama on CBS, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.
Hanna-Barbera had their takes on the story.
