The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show and Scrappy Too! is a package show produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1980 for ABC Saturday mornings. The program contained segments from Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo and Richie Rich. The Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo shorts represents the sixth show in which Scooby-Doo appears. This was the only Hanna-Barbera package series for which Scooby-Doo was given second billing and also notable for Richie Rich's debut in animation. This was also the first Scooby-Doo incarnation to exclude Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley and Daphne Blake, though silhouettes of those characters appeared in the Scooby-Doo title cards in Season 1, but were removed in Season 2. The downsizing of the cast of characters was likely designed to make the animation work simpler in order to meet deadlines before they are broadcast. Daphne returned to the cast in 1983.

Trivia[]

  • The series was originally scheduled to premiere in September 1980, as was advertised in publications by Harvey Comics, but was delayed until 5 November 1980, along with the rest of ABC's Saturday-morning lineup, because of a voice actors' strike.
  • During the second season, only eight episodes had new Richie Rich cartoons, and most or all of the remaining episodes in that season were repeats from the first season.

Releases[]

Many of the Richie Rich segments from this series was released in a series of VHS compilations by WorldVision Enterprises later in the 1980s. All of the Richie Rich segments from this series were later rebroadcast in syndication.

In May 2008, the first seven episodes of this series was released on The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show Volume 1 DVD set; unfortunately, no Volume 2 set was released - possibly due to lower-than-expected sales. A re-release of the Volume 1 set was offered in 2017.

All of the segments from this series - except for the Gems segments and the Riches segment "The Money Talks" - are presently available on the Boomerang website.
